Sun
is the ultimate source of energy on
earth. It creates energy by the process of
nuclear fusion
where nuclear fission. The nuclei of two atoms fuse or join together,
giving off excess neutrons. In this process, the nuclei of hydrogen,
fuse
to create the nuclei of
helium.
The resulting helium nucleus is lighter than
sum of the hydrogen atoms that
have joined
together, and the difference in
mass
is represented by a release of
energy, according to Einstein. s formula
E = mc2.
In spite of difficulties involved in achieving a controlled
fusion reaction, experiments
are being carried out in a number
of countries. The potential rewards are almost incalculable. One gram of deuterium
would release
energy equivalent to more than
three metric tons of coal.
And a gram of tritium
would yield as much energy as half
a metric ton of coal. Hydrogen in the form of deuterium and tritium
is a substance
that will exist as long as there is
water
on earth. NUCLEAR FUSION, in other words,
may be the key to almost complete
independence for mankind in creating energy.
The activity of Nuclear Fusion Research Center is divided into four groups:
